Filming Locations in the Canary Islands
The Canary Islands are one of the world’s most diverse filming destinations, offering an extraordinary range of landscapes within a compact area. From volcanic moonscapes to subtropical forests, golden dunes to rugged coastlines, the archipelago has doubled for Africa, the Middle East, Mars, and countless other settings in major international productions.
Tenerife
Spain’s largest island offers the dramatic Teide National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site at 3,718 metres), colonial architecture in La Laguna, black sand beaches, lush laurel forests in Anaga, and modern urban settings in Santa Cruz. Tenerife has hosted major productions including Clash of the Titans, Rambo: Last Blood, and Jason Bourne.
Gran Canaria
Known as a “miniature continent,” Gran Canaria features the iconic Maspalomas sand dunes, pine-covered mountains in Tamadaba Natural Park, dramatic ravines (barrancos), colourful old towns, and extensive studio facilities. The island is home to a growing film infrastructure with experienced local crews.
Lanzarote
Lanzarote’s volcanic landscape is unlike anywhere else on Earth. Timanfaya National Park, the Jameos del Agua lava tubes, vineyards in La Geria, and dramatic coastal cliffs make it a favourite for science fiction, fantasy, and otherworldly settings. The entire island is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
Fuerteventura
With vast sandy beaches, arid desert plains, and turquoise waters, Fuerteventura is ideal for desert, beach, and adventure-themed productions. The Corralejo dunes and Jandia Peninsula offer pristine, crowd-free locations year-round.
La Palma, La Gomera & El Hierro
The western islands offer untouched natural beauty. La Palma’s Caldera de Taburiente and world-class observatories, La Gomera’s ancient Garajonay laurel forest (UNESCO), and El Hierro’s dramatic coastline provide unique, remote locations rarely seen on screen.
